May 16: National Barbecue Day: (National
BBQ Day): -- An annual serving of a reminder of the delicious food
that Americans have access to! Go to a restaurant or have a grill
in your own backyard. Just make sure you celebrate the day with
great fervor! From hot dogs and hamburgers to pineapple and
vegetables, there's something for everyone at a barbecue. Gather
your friends and family and get grilling! There's one thing that
truly tells you that it's summer, and that's the rich savory smell
of barbecue floating through the air. In every small town all over
the world, the smell of starter fluid and charcoal is a sign that
something beautiful is happening in a backyard somewhere. National
Barbecue Day was created to laud this age-old cooking practice,
and to encourage us all to get out and try our hand at creating
delicious backyard cuisine. The word 'barbecue' is used to
describe the name of a gathering or meal, style of food, grilling
device, or cooking method whereby barbecued foods are cooked and
served. A barbecue can refer to a type of social occasion that
features this sort of cooking. It can also refer to the way the
meat is cooked, as well as the cooking method that is used. We
love nothing more than getting our friends and family together on
a warm day and enjoying delicious barbecued meat with a fresh and
crispy salad and other tasty side dishes. When the sun comes out,
even if we only experience a mere glimmer of light, the country
transforms and a BBQ is the first thing on everyone's mind. If you
are planning on hosting an event, whether it is a celebratory
occasion or a mere get together, an outdoor BBQ never fails, and
National Barbecue Day celebrates this! Not that we need an excuse
to get the barbecue out! Barbecuing is typically done outside by
smoking meat over charcoal or wood. Of course, you can also
barbecue fish and vegetables as well. There are a lot of different
countries that practice barbecues, with a number of regional
varieties. You can spend some time reading up on the different
styles of barbecue and the various traditions. Look at the
different items that are popular in various areas. For example,
pulled pork sandwiches are a big hit in Memphis and North
Carolina. In Maryland, pit beef prevails as the main choice, with
mutton being popular in Kentucky. There are a number of different
techniques that can be used when barbecuing. This includes
grilling, roasting, and smoking. The technique after which a
barbecue is named incorporates cooking while using smoke at very
long temperatures, as well as long cooking times. First let us
begin with a simple definition, what is barbecue? Barbecue is a
process by which food is prepared over an indirect heat, and is
flavored by the smoke produced by the source of that heat. In that
one simple sentence, you begin to get an idea of just how complex
the process of proper barbecuing can be. Everything you do when
preparing a barbecued meal changes the flavor of the end product.
That's where you get the term "apple smoked" or
"mesquite grilled", these meals have all been touched by
the flavor of the wood-smoke they were cooked over. The origins of
barbecue seem to lay with the indigenous Haitians encountered by
the Spanish when Columbus first arrived. They discovered them
cooking meat on sticks suspended above the fire, flavored by the
smoke and heat, and brought the process back home. So it was that
term barbacoa entered the Spanish lexicon, and it didn't take long
from there for it to become barbecue. The process has spread all
over the world and is now used to prepare all sorts of things,
from every type of meat imaginable to fruits and vegetables.

May 16: National Waiters' Day/National
Waitress' Day (United Kingdom): -- Honors and uplifts the
hospitality industry workers of the United Kingdom. Just as the
word 'waiter' originates from the noun 'wait', the profession is
all about waiting for people and addressing all their needs. Fred
Siriex, the creator of the holiday, describes the day as a
wonderful chance to promote the numerous career opportunities that
the hospitality industry offers. National Waiters' Day asks us to
open our hearts and our wallets to show our genuine appreciation
for this grueling yet promising profession. National Waiters' Day
fights the stigma of viewing waitressing as just an unskilled
vocation and not a dignified and hardworking job that can lead to
a rewarding career. The day is an ode not just to the waiters but
to the entire service industry. As the great Anthony Bourdain once
said, "You can always tell when a person has worked in a
restaurant. There's an empathy that can only be cultivated by
those who've stood between a hungry mouth and a 28 USD pork chop."
National Waiters' Day is the initiative of the French restaurateur
Fred Sirieix, who dedicated the day to celebrating hospitality as
an exciting and fulfilling profession. Sirieix's long-term
association with the hospitality industry is the reason behind his
passion. After his first job as a waiter at age 16, Siriex
cultivated a unique perspective about leading a life of serving
others, which propelled him to a career in catering. It is his
belief that his brief stint as a service staff taught him more
about life than any fancy degree ever could. Since 2013, National
Waiters' Day has been observed across the U.K. The day is
accredited with Springboard Charity and has partnered with the
London Hospitality Festival in the past. A distinctive Waiters'
Day Competition is held involving a race amongst waiters for the
spill-free delivery of a water tray from one location to the
other. In 2018, Springboard's race raised over _30,000 to help
those who want to progress their careers in the hospitality

May 16: Horse Rescue Day: -- A day that
supports equine welfare, contributing to the care and
rehabilitation of horses in need, fostering a brighter future for
them. Imagine a day entirely devoted to our hoofed friends, a day
that gallops into the hearts of many with a mission of kindness
and care. Welcome to Horse Rescue Day! Celebrated with enthusiasm
on May 16th each year, this special occasion is not just about
admiring these majestic creatures but about taking a stand for
their welfare and protection. Even though this wasn't the case in
the past, we now see a world where care for these animals has
transformed, with numerous organizations working to rescue horses
from neglect and abuse. This day shines a spotlight on the crucial
need for support, urging everyone to contribute, whether through
donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word. Why do we
earmark this day for our equine pals? With their grace and beauty,
horses have been indispensable companions to humans for millennia.
Unfortunately, many find themselves in dire straits due to neglect
or mistreatment. Horse Rescue Day is a clarion call to acknowledge
these challenges and celebrate the organizations offering these
horses a second chance at life. By adopting instead of shopping,
donating, or volunteering, we can all be part of the solution,
ensuring these noble animals receive the love and care they
deserve. So, let's gallop together into action this Horse Rescue
Day. It's a perfect time to show our support for horse welfare and
honor rescue organizations' tireless efforts. Whether you're a
horse enthusiast or simply someone who cares about animal welfare,
there are countless ways to make a difference. Let's use this day
to spread awareness and help ensure that every horse can live a
life full of kindness, care, and respect. This day is all about
highlighting the plight of these majestic creatures and rallying
support for their rescue and welfare. The roots of Horse Rescue
Day stretch back over centuries, evolving from a time when the
well-being of horses was often overlooked. Initially, in the
Western world, the well-being of horses wasn't a major concern
until the 17th century, when the perception began to shift, partly
due to the influence of Islamic cultures that held a deep respect
for horses. The turning point in the public consciousness came
with the establishment of the Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals and the publication of the novel "Black
Beauty," sparking a widespread debate on horse protection
that spread across the United States and Europe. This led to
various laws being enacted to safeguard horses from abuse, marking
the start of a significant transformation in how horses were
viewed and treated. Fast-forward to today and efforts to rescue
horses from neglect and abuse have culminated in the establishment
of numerous organizations dedicated to their cause. These
organizations tirelessly work to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome
horses, often relying on donations and volunteers due to the lack
of state or federal funding. Horse Rescue Day underscores the
importance of these rescue operations, urging people to donate,
volunteer, and spread awareness to ensure horses receive the love
and care they deserve. Observing Horse Rescue Day can take many
forms, from donating to horse welfare organizations to
volunteering at local shelters. It's a day for everyone who cares
about horses to contribute in their own way, ensuring these
animals are protected and loved. Whether it's through financial
support, offering your time, or simply using social media to raise
awareness, every action counts towards making a significant
difference in the lives of these noble animals. So, let's gallop
into action this Horse Rescue Day and show our support for the
well-being of horses everywhere. Together, we can help ensure that
horses around the world are treated with the care and respect they
deserve. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Embraces the uniqueness of boyhood, cherishing strengths, and
celebrating the joy in every spirited moment of life. Set aside
some time on this day to focus on the well-being of boys in the
family, in the classroom, in community groups and more.
International Boys' Day offers a time to show appreciation for and
celebrate the strengths and joys that go along with being a boy -
not in competition with girls, but in tandem with them. All
children deserve to be happy, healthy and valued in their families
and communities. International Boys' Day is just one way to help
do that! International Boys' Day got its start in 2018 when it
became a project of Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh from Trinidad and
Tobago. At this time, Dr. Teelucksingh issued letters to various
NGOs and government leaders, encouraging them to participate in
the inaugural observance of this event. It may have been founded
in response to the United Nations' celebration of the
International Day of the Girl Child in 2012. Dr. Teelucksingh is a
strong proponent of the need to support boys and men, and in 1999
he was also the founder of International Men's Day. Sometimes
called the International Day of the Boy Child, the purpose behind
this day is not to be in opposition to children who are girls, but
to recognize that both genders need help and support as they grow
to become men and women who hold the future of the planet and
society. One hope for the day is that boys can be raised in homes
and communities that will overcome various harmful influences of
society, such as the need for machismo and bravado. Instead
International Boys' Day encourages teaching and modeling for boys
values that include honor and integrity so that they can
contribute to their families and society, making the world a
better place for both boys and girls. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

celebrated by expressing yourself through drawing just about
anything you like! Did you know that drawing is an art closely
tied to our history? Even cavemen who hadn't yet learned to talk
drew hunting scenes on cave walls. Today, we have so many modern
tools to help us create extremely realistic and artistic drawings
such as a plain sketchbook and pencil or a tablet and stylus. The
earliest drawings have been recorded since around 10000 B.C. These
drawings were carvings that were discovered in ancient caves in
Europe. In around 3000 B.C., ancient Egyptians made drawings on
their temples that featured scenes from their daily lives. Even
the written transcripts of that era had similar illustrations that
were drawn with ink. Similarly, the Greeks drew intricate figures
and patterns on clay vases. Before paper had been invented, people
used animal skins and wooden planks to write, draw, and paint on.
During the 1400s, drawings played an eminent role in religious
books, which featured miniature drawings that were hand-drawn with
gold and ink. Later, contemporary drawing styles started becoming
popular in Europe as paper had become readily available
everywhere. Renaissance artists became famous and ink was their
favorite medium. Other mediums like colored chalks and charcoal
were also used to add shading and bring out textures in their
drawings. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

May 16: National Classic Movie Day: A day
to reminisce about the movies we have seen on the big screen. Grab
some popcorn, a drink, and find a cozy chair to relax in! Today
presents an opportunity to celebrate the film industry and put
spotlight on iconic movies that remain favorites through the
years. Remember stories on the big screen that became a legacy by
shaping culture! Many critics define a classic movie as any movie
that is memorable or makes an impact on society. A true classic
movie impacts pop culture, influences society, and remains a part
of our lives. In fact, a classic movie is one that has or will
withstand the test of time and remain memorable through
generations. Every classic movie contains pieces to a large
puzzle. Joining these pieces together takes time, dedication,
vision, and creativity beginning with the screen writer to final
productions. Classic movies can be of any genre, including comedy,
suspense, action, thriller, drama, time piece, or romance. Classic
movies tell a story through iconic characters that inspire us;
contain ideas we can relate to and that seem relevant to our
current lives; provide iconic scenes from exotic locations people
wish to visit; contain exceptional graphics, acting, music, and
storylines; address humanism by including experiences, emotion,
and even conflict that carry over through time; incorporate
social, political, or historical information that captures the
time period of the film; maintain a popular fan base and gain new
fans as time goes on; present opportunity to re-watch the movie on
a variety of platforms, such as the big screen, television, and
streaming services; pioneer historical topics that push boundaries
in society; and Recognize praise by critics in the industry before
receiving positive reviews and awards. Every great movie contains
an ending that leaves us feeling some sort of emotion. Whether the
ending is sad, triumphant, or empowering, the movie ending is what
makes us walk away feeling content. Sometimes we feel an internal
feeling of sadness after the ending of a movie. However, we also
feel happiness because our perception of the ending was fitting.
Is this what sends us back to watch a movie again and again? The
Golden Age in film began in 1927 and ended around 1959. It was
during this time Hollywood began producing iconic films containing
advancements in picture quality and sound. In fact, film
historians often say 1939 was the most memorable year in movie
history, which includesThe Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind, Of
Mice and Men, The Little Princess, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,
Wuthering Heights and (filmed in 1939) His Gal Friday. When we
think of a classic movie, we often think of a movie in black and
white. However, many movies of modern time have become classics.
Movies like Jaws, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, the Star
Wars Saga, and Star Trek Saga have become iconic classics from the
1970s and 1980s. In fact, recent movies like Avatar and John Wick
are box office hits that have already claimed the classic title

May 16: National Love A Tree Day: -- An
annual celebration right in the middle of Garden For Wildlife
Month. Did you know trees actually didn't exist for the first 90%
of Earth's history? Shocking, isn't it? Before trees, our Earth
had fungi that grew 26 feet tall and resembled trees. Trees have
played an irreplaceable role in the smooth functioning of our
environment and celebrating this special day dedicated to them is
the least we can do to appreciate them. Trees can be thousands and
thousands of years old with many species tending to have long
lifespans. In fact, trees can be traced back to the creation of
the world, according to the Bible and the story of Adam and Eve
who ate the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
From well-preserved cellular anatomy, it has been found that
Cladoxylopsida were the first species of large trees to appear on
Earth almost 400 million years ago in the Devonian period. The
other earliest trees were known to be tree ferns, horsetails, and
lycophytes and, currently, it is estimated that there are close to
three trillion mature trees in the world. Trees have so many
benefits - they provide us with lumber, food, nuts, oxygen to
breathe, home for wildlife, and much more. Trees are even used for
ornamental and decoration purposes. In the United States itself,
there are approximately 766 million acres of forest land. Trees
form an essential part of our environment and, over the years,
their importance has been taught to children growing up. Even in
recent times, individuals have become so environmentally conscious
that a sustainable lifestyle to protect our trees has become the
norm. Most people now want to protect and preserve our trees,
which make the world a better and safer place to live in. While
the hunt to find the origins of this day is still on, an entire
day of appreciation for trees that have given us so much is the
least we can do. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Miracle Of Light History Peter Coyote MP4 Video Download DVD
May 16: International Day Of Light: -- Celebrates the contribution of light and light-based technologies to various fields and areas of life, including arts and culture, education, medicine, communications, science, and sustainable development. Did you know that in 1802 Humphrey Davy invented the world's first electric lamp? International Day of Light commemorates the anniversary of physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman's first successful laser operation in 1960. The day is observed by the United Nations and administered by UNESCO's International Basic Science Programme (I.B.S.P.). International Day of Light is celebrated around the world through events and forums organized by people both inside and outside the scientific community. Since antiquity, humans have used various materials to produce light, ranging from hollow rock, shells, or wood soaked in animal fat and oil lamps to candles and gas. The modern history of light began with the invention of the electric light bulb. Contrary to popular belief, the light bulb was invented long before Thomas Edison patented it. Edison only made it possible for the light bulb to be manufactured commercially. In 1802, Humphrey Davy invented the electric arc lamp, an early predecessor of the incandescent electric bulb, by connecting voltaic piles to charcoal electrodes. However, the arc lamp was not a practical source of lighting as it was too bright for domestic or work uses, and it burned out quickly. This invention led to the creation of the miner's safety lamp in 1815 and street lighting in several European cities, including Paris, during the 1800s. In 1850, Joseph Swan solved one of the problems that electric lamp inventors have encountered over the years: the cost-effectiveness of the lamp's filament. In place of platinum filaments, Swan used cheap carbonized paper filaments. In 1878, he patented his electric lamp in the United Kingdom and demonstrated it at a lecture in Newcastle, England. Swan's invention, like Davy's arc lamp, was impractical for everyday use due to the inefficiency of its vacuum pumps. When Edison discovered the flaw in Swan's electric lamp, he made improvements and presented his light bulb in December 1879. Swan copied these improvements and established an electrical lighting company in England. Edison filed a patent infringement case against Swan, but this failed. Edison and Swan later formed an alliance called Edison-Swan United, which grew to become the world's largest light bulb manufacturer. In the early 1960s, Nick Holonyak, an employee at General Electric, accidentally invented the red LED light and patented it for use as a light fixture. In the early 1990s, Japanese and American scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura created the blue LED and were awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for it. Scientists were able to create white LEDs as a result of this. Lighting is becoming more advanced and sophisticated, with the ability to light up homes and streets wirelessly - using smartphones and AI voice commands. Incandescent light bulbs are also being phased out, with halogen, LED, and OLED alternatives taking their place. good things happen only when people come together as a community
and help each other during good times and bad. Valentino has
worked selflessly for years and today he has over 500
proclamations for Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day. These
proclamations have poured in from villages, towns, and cities
across the U.S. and Canada. Starr Valentino founded this day of
care and consideration 12 years ago. What started as an altruistic
effort gathered a lot of recognition from local politicians and,
today, over 100 cities in the United States recognize this day!
Valentino says that the day is dedicated to helping and kindness
and a day for Americans to express love and gratitude toward each
other. The day is celebrated in neighborhoods by acts of
compassion, sharing, and caring. 12 years since the day was first
celebrated, Valentino continues to spread joy through every

Together In Peace: -- Urges people to live in a united and
peaceful way by listening to, respecting, and appreciating others.
They say that variety is the spice of life. Unfortunately, many
people feel threatened by those who are different than them. While
it seems like our nation and our world are more polarized than
ever, the universe has a long history of racism, prejudice, and
war. This special day is about embracing our differences and
coming together in unity and harmony. It's a day where we focus on
listening, recognizing, and appreciating others. The aim is to
build a sustainable world filled with peace, solidarity, and
understanding. The United Nations established this day to
encourage everyone across the globe to promote peace, tolerance,
inclusion, and solidarity. It reminds us that despite our diverse
backgrounds and beliefs, we can coexist peacefully and
respectfully. By celebrating this day, we commit to a collective
effort to advance in areas such as education, culture, and
cooperation. These fields are essential for fostering peace and
bringing people closer together. The importance of May 16th lies
in its call for action. It encourages individuals, communities,
and nations to engage in activities that promote mutual
understanding and respect for human rights. The day is about
recognizing our differences and actively working towards
reconciliation, forgiveness, and compassion. Doing so contributes
to a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable world for all. The
International Day of Living Together in Peace is a relatively new
global observance established by the United Nations General
Assembly in 2017. This day, celebrated annually on May 16th, was
created to promote worldwide peace, tolerance, inclusion,
understanding, and solidarity. It emphasizes the importance of
living together in peace to regularly mobilize the international
community's efforts towards these goals. The idea behind the day
is rooted in accepting differences, listening to, recognizing,
respecting, and appreciating others. It encourages everyone to
live peacefully and unite, highlighting the significance of unity
in diversity. The establishment of this day serves as a reminder
that despite our varied backgrounds, it's possible to coexist
harmoniously. The first official celebration of this day took
place in 2018. It marked a significant step by the international
community towards promoting a culture of peace and non-violence.
This observance underlines the importance of collective action and
solidarity in fostering peaceful coexistence. The UN aims to

found that 92% of drivers agree that poor wiper blades can affect
their driving ability. However, 90% of drivers do not plan the
time to check their wipers properly and 55%+ do not know how to

have numerous elders to thank for the strides made over the last
several decades towards equality. As with other civil rights

The goals of this national day are raising awareness about the
ones who came before, recognizing their accomplishments and
struggles, providing tools like healthcare services and
counseling, patient resources, and providing adequate social

Governor of New York and United States Senator from New York, 24th
United States Secretary Of State from 1861 to 1869 (d. October 10,
1872) is #born William Henry Seward in the village of Florida, in
Orange County, New York, where his father was a farmer and owned
slaves. He was educated as a lawyer and moved to the Central New
York town of Auburn. Seward was elected to the New York State
Senate in 1830 as an Anti-Mason. Four years later, he became the
gubernatorial nominee of the Whig Party. Though he was not
successful in that race, Seward was elected governor in 1838 and
won a second two-year term in 1840. During this period, he signed
several laws that advanced the rights of and opportunities for
black residents, as well as guaranteeing fugitive slaves jury
trials in the state. The legislation protected abolitionists, and
he used his position to intervene in cases of freed black people
who were enslaved in the South. After many years of practicing law
in Auburn, he was elected by the state legislature to the U.S.
Senate in 1849. Seward's strong stances and provocative words
against slavery brought him hatred in the South. He was re-elected
to the Senate in 1855, and soon joined the nascent Republican
Party, becoming one of its leading figures. As the 1860
presidential election approached, he was regarded as the leading
candidate for the Republican nomination. Several factors,
including attitudes to his vocal opposition to slavery, his
support for immigrants and Catholics, and his association with
editor and political boss Thurlow Weed, worked against him, and
Abraham Lincoln secured the presidential nomination. Although
devastated by his loss, he campaigned for Lincoln, who appointed
him Secretary Of State after winning the election. Seward did his
best to stop the southern states from seceding; once that failed,
he devoted himself wholeheartedly to the Union cause. His firm
stance against foreign intervention in the Civil War helped deter
the United Kingdom and France from possibly gaining the
independence of the Confederate States. He was one of the targets
of the 1865 assassination plot that killed Lincoln, and was
seriously wounded by conspirator Lewis Powell. Seward remained in
his post through the presidency of Andrew Johnson, during which he
negotiated the Alaska Purchase in 1867 and supported Johnson
during his impeachment. His contemporary Carl Schurz described
Seward as "one of those spirits who sometimes will go ahead
of public opinion instead of tamely following its footprints".
William H. Seward died in Auburn, New York as he worked at his
desk in the morning as usual; he then complained of trouble
breathing. Seward grew worse during the day, as his family
gathered around him. Asked if he had any final words, he said,
"Love one another", a quote from John 13:34-35: "A
new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as
I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men
will know that you are My disciples, if you have love one for
another" Seward died that afternoon. His funeral a few days
later was preceded by the people of Auburn and nearby filing past
his open casket for four hours. Thurlow Weed was there for the
burial of his friend, and Harriet Tubman, a former slave whom the
Sewards had aided, sent flowers. President Grant sent his regrets
he could not be there. William Seward rests with his wife Frances
and daughter Fanny (1844-1866), in Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn. A
determined opponent of the spread of slavery in the years leading
up to the American Civil War, William Henry Seward was a prominent
figure in the Republican Party in its formative years, and was
praised for his work on behalf of the Union as Secretary Of State
during the Civil War. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

May 16, 1868: Federal Impeachments In The
United States: The Reconstruction Era (Reconstruction): The
Impeachment Of Andrew Johnson: -- United States President Andrew
Johnson is acquitted in his impeachment trial by one vote in the
United States Senate. The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson occurred
in 1868, when the United States House Of Representatives resolved
to impeach President Andrew Johnson, adopting eleven articles of
impeachment detailing his "high crimes and misdemeanors,"
in accordance with Article Two of the United States Constitution.
The House's primary charge against Johnson was violation of the
Tenure of Office Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in March 1867,
over the president's veto. Specifically, he had removed from
office Edwin M. Stanton, the Secretary of War - whom the Act was
largely designed to protect - and attempted to replace him with
Brevet Major General Lorenzo Thomas (Earlier, while Congress was
not in session, Johnson had suspended Stanton and appointed
General Ulysses S. Grant as secretary of war ad interim). The
House approved the articles of impeachment on March 2-3, 1868, and
forwarded them to the Senate. The trial in the Senate began three
days later, with Chief Justice of the United States Salmon P.
Chase presiding. On May 16, the Senate failed to convict Johnson
on one of the articles, with the 35-19 vote in favor of conviction
falling short of the necessary two-thirds majority by a single
vote. A ten-day recess was called before attempting to convict him
on additional articles. The delay did not change the outcome,
however, as on May 26, it failed to convict the President on two
articles, both by the same margin; after which the trial was
adjourned. This was the first impeachment of a President since
creation of the office in 1789. The culmination of a lengthy
political battle between Johnson, a lifelong Democrat and the
Republican majority in Congress over how best to deal with the
defeated Southern states following the conclusion of the American
Civil War, the impeachment, and the subsequent trial (and
acquittal) of Johnson were among the most dramatic events in the
political life of the nation during the Reconstruction Era.
Together, they have gained a historical reputation as an act of
political expedience, rather than necessity, which was based on
Johnson's defiance of an unconstitutional piece of legislation,
and which was conducted with little regard for the will of a
general public which, despite the unpopularity of Johnson, opposed
the impeachment. Johnson is one of only three presidents against
whom articles of impeachment have been reported to the full House
for consideration. In 1974, during the Watergate scandal, the
House Judiciary Committee approved articles of impeachment against
Richard Nixon, who resigned from office, rather than face certain
impeachment and the prospect of being convicted at trial and
removed from office. In 1999, Bill Clinton was impeached; He, like
Johnson, was acquitted from all charges following a Senate trial.

May 16, 1888: Electric Power: The History
Of Electric Power: Electric Power Transmission: The History Of
Electric Power Transmission: Alternating Current: -- At a meeting
of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE, precursor
of today's Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE)) in New York City, Nikola Tesla delivers a lecture
describing a new generation of equipment which would allow more
efficient generation and use of alternating currents to transmit
electric power, then demonstrates his just-patented AC induction
motor, which he developed in 1887. While Tesla was getting the
motor patented, the team of Alfred S. Brown, a Western Union
superintendent, and New York attorney Charles F. Peck, two men who
were experienced in setting up companies and promoting inventions
and patents for financial gain, arranged to get the motor
publicized, starting with independent testing to verify it was a
functional improvement, followed by press releases sent to
technical publications for articles to run concurrent with the
issue of the patent. Physicist William Arnold Anthony (who tested
the motor) and Electrical World magazine editor Thomas Commerford
Martin arranged for Tesla's lecture and demonstration before the
AIEE. Engineers working for the Westinghouse Electric &
Manufacturing Company reported to George Westinghouse that Tesla
had a viable AC motor and related power system, something
Westinghouse needed for the alternating current system he was
already marketing. Westinghouse looked into getting a patent on a
similar commutator-less, rotating magnetic field-based induction
motor developed in 1885 and presented in a paper in March 1888 by
Italian physicist Galileo Ferraris, but decided that Tesla's
patent would probably control the market. In July 1888, Brown and
Peck negotiated a licensing deal with George Westinghouse for
Tesla's polyphase induction motor and transformer designs earned
him a considerable amount of money. He was paid 60K USD in cash
and stock and a royalty of 2.50 USD per AC horsepower produced by
each motor. Westinghouse also hired Tesla for one year for the
large fee of 2K USD (56.9K USD today) per month to be a consultant
at the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company's
Pittsburgh labs. Tesla's alternating current (AC) induction motor
and related polyphase AC patents and became the cornerstone of the
polyphase system which that company eventually marketed.
Alternating Current (AC) is a power system format that was rapidly
expanding in Europe and the United States because of its
advantages in long-distance, high-voltage transmission. The motor
used polyphase current, which generated a rotating magnetic field
to turn the motor, a principle that Tesla claimed to have
conceived in 1882. This innovative electric motor was a simple
self-starting design that did not need a commutator (a rotary
electrical switch in certain types of electric motors and
electrical generators that periodically reverses the current
direction between the rotor and the external circuit), thus
avoiding sparking and the high maintenance of constantly servicing
and replacing mechanical brushes. ========= May 16, 1891: Electric

The History Of Electric Power Transmission: Alternating Current:
-- The International Electrotechnical Exhibition: On the disused
site of the three former "Westbahnhofe" (Western Railway
Stations) in Frankfurt, The International Electrotechnical
Exhibition begins, featuring the first long distance transmission
of high-power, three-phase electric current, which was generated
175 km (108 mi) away at Lauffen am Neckar, Germany. As a result of
this successful field trial, three-phase current became
established for electrical transmission networks throughout the
world. A hydraulic turbine at Lauffen powered a three-phase
alternator with a revolving field. The alternator revolved at 150
revolutions per minute, and had a rotating field magnet with 32
poles. It was rated at 300 hp and had a terminal voltage of 55
volts. The frequency of the current was 40 Hz. Power from the
alternator was stepped up to 8000 volts for transmission by
oil-insulated transformers. Later tests were carried out with
transmission voltage up to 25,000 volts (between phases). The
transmission line was erected with the assistance of the German
Post Office and used about 60 tonnes of copper wire, 4 mm in
diameter. At the exhibition, the voltage was stepped down by
further oil-filled transformers and connected to motors and a
motor-generator system for lamps. Overall efficiency from turbine
to load was an average of 75%, which resolved many doubts of the
practicality of long-distance electric power transmission. On Sale

American biologist, inventor, instrument maker and early exponent
of high-magnification time-lapse microscopy, reputed by the New
York Times and other newspapers of record to have discovered and
employed a cure for cancer (d. August 5, 1971) is #born Royal
Raymond Rife in Elkhorn, Nebraska. He is known for his
microscopes, which he claimed could observe live microorganisms
with a magnification considered impossible for his time, and for
an "oscillating beam ray" invention, which produced
impulses of electromagnetic frequencies he used to disable
cancerous cells and other microorganisms responsible for various
ailments by "devitalizing disease organisms" through
vibration. (Radionics, also called electromagnetic therapy (EMT)
and the Abrams Method, -is a form of alternative medicine by which
disease can be diagnosed and treated by applying electromagnetic
radiation (EMR), such as radio waves, to the body from an
electrically powered device.) Although he came to collaborate with
scientists, doctors and inventors of the epoch, and his findings
were published in newspapers and scientific journals like the
Smithsonian Institution annual report of 1944, they were later
rejected by the American Medical Association (AMA), the American
Cancer Society (ACS) and mainstream science. In the 1930s, he made
several optical compound microscopes and, using a movie camera,
took time-lapse microscopy movies of microbes. He also built
microscopes that included polarizers to polarize the light. Rife
also reported that a 'beam ray' device of his invention could
destroy microbial pathogens. Rife claimed to have documented a
"Mortal Oscillatory Rate" for various pathogenic
organisms, and to be able to destroy the organisms by vibrating
them at this particular rate. According to the San Diego Evening
Tribune in 1938, Rife stopped short of claiming that he could cure
cancer, but did argue that he could "devitalize disease
organisms" in living tissue, "with certain exceptions".
In a 1931 profile, Rife warned against "medical fakers"
who claim to cure disease using "electrical 'vibrations'",
stating that his work did not uphold such claims. Rife's claims
about his beam ray could not be independently replicated and were
discredited by independent researchers during the 1950s. Rife
blamed the scientific rejection of his claims on a conspiracy
involving the American Medical Association (AMA), the Department
of Public Health, and other elements of "organized medicine",
which had "brainwashed and intimidated" his colleagues.
An obituary in the Daily Californian described his death in El
Cajon, California of a heart attack at the age of 83, stating that
he died penniless and embittered by the failure of his devices to
garner scientific acceptance. He is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery
in San Diego, California. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

American film and stage actor, documentary host and film narrator
with a career spanning five decades (d. August 12, 1982) is #born
Henry Jaynes Fonda in Grand Island, Nebraska. He made his mark
early as a Broadway actor. He also appeared in 1938 in plays
performed in White Plains, New York, with Joan Tompkins. He made
his Hollywood debut in 1935, and his career gained momentum after
his Academy Award-nominated performance as Tom Joad in The Grapes
Of Wrath, a 1940 adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel about an
Oklahoma family who moved west during the Dust Bowl. Throughout
five decades in Hollywood, Fonda cultivated a strong, appealing
screen image in such classics as The Ox-Bow Incident, Mister
Roberts, and 12 Angry Men. Later, Fonda moved toward darker epics
such as Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West and lighter
roles in family comedies such as Yours, Mine and Ours with Lucille
Ball, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 54th Academy
Awards for the movie On Golden Pond, his final film role. Fonda
was the patriarch of a family of famous actors, including daughter
Jane Fonda, son Peter Fonda, granddaughter Bridget Fonda, and
grandson Troy Garity. His family and close friends called him
"Hank". In 1999, he was named the sixth-Greatest Male
Star of All Time by the American Film Institute. Henry Fonda died
at his Los Angeles, California home from heart disease, aged 77.
Fonda's wife, Shirlee, his daughter Jane, and his son Peter were
at his side that day. He suffered from prostate cancer, but this
did not directly cause his death and was noted only as a
concurrent ailment on his death certificate. Fonda requested that
no funeral be held. Henry Fonda was cremated "within hours of
his death" and had specified that he wanted his "ashes
thrown out with the trash." Fortunately, his family hated
that idea and scattered his cremated remains in a meaningful place
that is not publicly disclosed. President Ronald Reagan, a former
actor himself, hailed Fonda as "a true professional dedicated
to excellence in his craft. He graced the screen with a sincerity

American historian, actor, television and radio broadcaster, and
author (d. October 31, 2008) is #born Louis Terkel to Russian
Jewish immigrants, Samuel Terkel, a tailor, and Anna (Annie)
Finkel, a seamstress, in New York City. At the age of eight, he
moved with his family to Chicago, Illinois, where he spent most of
his life; he said that once he inhaled the ubiquitous aroma of the
cattle cars in the Chicago railroad stockyards of his
neigbhorhood, "my asthma instantly disappeared". He had
two brothers, Meyer (1905-1958) and Ben (1907-1965). He was
inspired to nickname himself "Studs" from James
Farrell's early depression era book trilogy "Studs Lonigan".
From 1926 to 1936, his parents ran a rooming house that also
served as a meeting place for people from all walks of life.
Terkel credited his understanding of humanity and social
interaction to the tenants and visitors who gathered in the lobby
there and the people who congregated in nearby Bughouse Square. In
1939, he married Ida Goldberg (1912-1999), and the couple had one
son. Although he received his undergraduate degree in 1932 and a
J.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1934 (and was
admitted to the Illinois Bar the following year), he decided that,
instead of practicing law, he wanted to be a concierge at a hotel,
and he soon joined a theater group. Studs Terkel received the
Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1985 for "The Good
War", and is best remembered for his oral histories of common
Americans, and his well-known radio program, titled The Studs
Terkel Program, aired on 98.7 WFMT Chicago between 1952 and 1997.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Terkel was also the central
character of Studs' Place, one of televisions earliest regularly
scheduled series presentations, an unscripted television drama
about the owner of a greasy-spoon diner in Chicago through which
many famous people and interesting characters passed. This show,
along with Marlin Perkins' Zoo Parade, Garroway at Large and the
children' show Kukla, Fran, and Ollie, are widely considered
canonical examples of the Chicago School of Television. Studs
Terkel died on a Friday Halloween in his Chicago home at the age
of 96; he had been suffering ever since a fall in his home earlier
that month. His remains were cremated, and his ashes, mixed with
those of his wife Ida, are scattered in Bughouse Square, a patch
of green park that so informed his first years in his adopted,
beloved city of Chicago, the premise of "Buried In Bughouse
Square: A Studs Terkel Circus", a play produced by Theater
And Performance Studies at The University Of Chicago directed by
Halena Kays, written by Jay Torrence and performed by a student
ensemble. Studs said: "Scatter us there. It's against the
law. Let 'em sue us." And that's where they are today, Studs
and Ida, lying near a lovely tree, summer, winter, spring, and
fall. Studs Terkel said "My epitaph? My epitaph will be this:

Theater Of World War I: The Sykes-Picot Agreement: -- The secret
wartime Sykes-Picot Agreement partitioning former Ottoman
territories such as Iraq and Syria is signed by Edward Grey,
British Secretary Of State for Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and Paul Cambon,
French Ambassador in London, on behalf of the French Third
Republic. The terms were negotiated by British diplomat Mark Sykes
and a French counterpart, Francois Georges-Picot. The Sykes-Picot
Agreement, officially known as the Asia Minor Agreement, was a
secret 1916 agreement between the United Kingdom and France, to
which the Russian Empire assented. The agreement defined their
mutually agreed spheres of influence and control in Southwestern
Asia. The agreement was based on the premise that the Triple
Entente would succeed in defeating the Ottoman Empire during World
War I. The negotiations leading to the agreement occurred between
November 1915 and March 1916 and it was signed 16 May 1916. The
deal, exposed to the public in Izvestia and Pravda on 23 November
1917 and in the British Guardian on November 26, 1917, is still
mentioned when considering the region and its present-day
conflicts. The agreement allocated to Britain control of areas
roughly comprising the coastal strip between the Mediterranean Sea
and the River Jordan, Jordan, southern Iraq, and an additional
small area that included the ports of Haifa and Acre, to allow
access to the Mediterranean. France got control of southeastern
Turkey, northern Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Russia was to get
Istanbul, the Turkish Straits and Armenia. The controlling powers
were left free to determine state boundaries within their areas.
Further negotiation was expected to determine international
administration in the "brown area" (an area including
Jerusalem, similar to and smaller than Mandate Palestine), the
form of which was to be decided upon after consultation with
Russia, and subsequently in consultation with the other Allies,
and the representatives of Hussein bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca. The
agreement effectively divided the Ottoman Arab provinces outside
the Arabian peninsula into areas of British and French control and
influence, and led later to the subsequent partitioning of the
Ottoman Empire following Ottoman defeat in 1918. The Acre-Haifa
zone was intended to be a British enclave in the North to enable
access to the Mediterranean. The British later gained control of
the brown zone and other territory in 1920 and ruled it as
Mandatory Palestine from 1923 until 1948. They also ruled
Mandatory Iraq from 1920 until 1932, while the French Mandate for
Syria and the Lebanon lasted from 1923 to 1946. The Tsarist
government was a minor party to the Sykes-Picot agreement, and
when, following the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks published
the agreement on 23 November 1917, "the British were
embarrassed, the Arabs dismayed and the Turks delighted". The
agreement is seen by many as a turning point in Western and Arab
relations. It negated the UK's promises to Arabs made for a
national Arab homeland in the area of Greater Syria, in exchange
for supporting the British against the Ottoman Empire. On Sale @

During World War I: The Sedition Act Of 1918: -- Criticism of the
government during wartime is made an imprisonable offense when The
Sedition Act Of 1918 is passed by the U.S. Congress; it will be
repealed less than two years later. The Sedition Act of 1918
extended the Espionage Act of 1917 to cover a broader range of
offenses, notably speech and the expression of opinion that cast
the government or the war effort in a negative light or interfered
with the sale of government bonds. It forbade the use of
"disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language"
about the United States government, its flag, or its armed forces
or that caused others to view the American government or its
institutions with contempt. Those convicted under the act
generally received sentences of imprisonment for five to 20 years.
The act also allowed the Postmaster General to refuse to deliver
mail that met those same standards for punishable speech or
opinion. It applied only to times "when the United States is
in war." The U.S. was in a declared state of war at the time
of passage, the First World War. The law was repealed on December
13, 1920. Though the legislation enacted in 1918 is commonly
called the Sedition Act, it was actually a set of amendments to
the Espionage Act. Therefore, many studies of the Espionage Act
and the Sedition Act find it difficult to report on the two "acts"
separately. For example, one historian reports that "some
fifteen hundred prosecutions were carried out under the Espionage
and Sedition Acts, resulting in more than a thousand convictions."
Court decisions do not use the shorthand term Sedition Act, but
the correct legal term for the law, the Espionage Act, whether as
originally enacted or as amended in 1918. On Sale @ 15% Off

Transatlantic Flight: The Transatlantic Flight Of Albert Cushing
Read: -- History's first transatlantic flight occurs when The
Curtiss NC-4, a Curtiss NC flying boat commanded by U.S. Navy's
Naval Aviator Number 24, Lieutenant Commander Albert Cushing Read,
takes off from Trepassey, Newfoundland, for Lisbon via the Azores,
a feat accomplished a couple of weeks before Alcock and Brown's
non-stop flight, and eight years before Charles Lindbergh's solo,
non-stop flight. The flight started from Rockaway Beach, Long
Island with the NC-4 carrying a crew of six: Albert Cushing Read,
the commander and navigator; Walter Hinton and Elmer Fowler Stone
(Coast Guard Aviator #1), the two pilots; James L. Breese and
Eugene S. Rhoads, the two flight engineers; and Herbert C. Rodd,
the radio operator. The flight took 23 days before arriving in
Plymouth, England on June 8. It made six stops, including layovers
at Trepassey Bay, Newfoundland, the Azores, and Lisbon, Portugal.
Its flight from the Azores to Lisbon completed the first
transatlantic flight between North America and Europe, and two
more flights from Lisbon to northwestern Spain to Plymouth,
England, completed the first flight between North America and
Great Britain. This accomplishment was somewhat eclipsed in the
minds of the public by the first nonstop transatlantic flight,
made by the Royal Air Force pilots John Alcock and Arthur Whitten
Brown two weeks later. On June 3, 1919, Read was made a commander
of the Order of the Tower and Sword by the Portuguese government.
After returning to the United States, Read was awarded the Navy
Distinguished Service Medal, which at the time was a more
prestigious award than the Navy Cross that the other five NC-4
crew members received (the order of award precedence was switched
in 1942). In 1929, Read and the rest of the flight crew of NC-4
were awarded Congressional Gold Medals. The Curtiss NC-4 aircraft
was designed by Glenn Curtiss and his team, and manufactured by
Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, with the hull built by the
Herreshoff Manufacturing Corporation in Bristol, Rhode Island.
Later in 1919, upon returning to the U.S., Read predicted: "It
soon will be possible to drive an airplane around the world at a
height of 60,000 feet and 1,000 miles per hour." The next
day, The New York Times ran an editorial in reaction, stating: "It
is one thing to be a qualified aviator, and quite another to be a
qualified prophet. Nothing now known supports the Lieutenant
Commander's forecast. An airplane at the height of 60,000 feet
would be whirling its propellers in a vacuum, and no aviator could
live long in the freezing cold of interstellar space." On

initiated after a petition of 1869 of the French Catholic
hierarchy. Two years later, Pope Pius XI declared Joan Of Arc to
be one of the patron saints of France in an apostolic letter on
March 2, 1922. Although pro-English clergy had Joan burnt at the
stake for heresy in 1431, she was rehabilitated in 1456 after a
posthumous retrial. Subsequently, she became a folk saint among
French Catholics and soldiers inspired by her story of being
commanded by God to fight for France against England. Many French
regimes encouraged her cult, and the Third Republic was
sympathetic to the canonization petition prior to the 1905
separation of church and state. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

ceremony takes place in Hollywood where Wings, a 1927 Paramount
Pictures silent First World War film produced by Lucien Hubbard,
directed by William A. Wellman and starring Clara Bow, Charles
"Buddy" Rogers and Richard Arlen (with Gary Cooper
appearing in a small role which helped launch his Hollywood
career) wins for Best Picture, the only silent film to do so. As
of 2017, a total of 3,140 Oscar statuettes have been awarded since
its inception in 1929. The Academy Awards, more popularly known as
the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit in the
film industry. Given annually by the Academy Of Motion Picture
Arts And Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are an international
recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by
the Academy's voting membership. The various category winners are
awarded a copy of a golden statuette, officially called the
"Academy Award of Merit", although more commonly
referred to by its nickname, the "Oscar". The statuette
depicts a knight rendered in the Art Deco style. The award was
originally sculpted by George Stanley from a design sketch by
Cedric Gibbons. AMPAS first presented it in 1929 at a private
dinner hosted by Douglas Fairbanks in the Hollywood Roosevelt
Hotel in what would become known as the 1st Academy Awards. The
Academy Awards ceremony was first broadcast by radio in 1930 and
was televised for the first time in 1953. It is the oldest
worldwide entertainment awards ceremony and is now televised live
worldwide. It is also the oldest of the four major annual American
entertainment awards; its other three equivalents - the Emmy
Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theater, and the Grammy
Awards for music - are modeled after the Academy Awards. It is
widely cited as the most famous and prestigious competitive award
in the field of entertainment. The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony,
honoring the best films of 2019, was held on February 9, 2020.
Like the previous ceremony, there was no host. The ceremony was
broadcast on ABC. It took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los
Angeles, California, for the 18th consecutive year. This ceremony
marked the first time in Oscar history that more than three films
had received ten or more nominations. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

Civil Aviation: -- On the thirty-second anniversary of history's
first transatlantic flight achieved by Albert Cushing Read, the
first regularly scheduled transatlantic flights begin when an El
Al Israel Airlines' Lockheed Constellation ("Connie")
airliner flies between Idlewild Airport (now John F Kennedy
International Airport) in New York City and Heathrow Airport in
London, England. A transatlantic flight is the flight of an
aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe, Africa, South
Asia, or the Middle East to North America, Latin America, or vice
versa. Such flights have been made by fixed-wing aircraft,
airships, balloons and other aircraft. Early aircraft engines did
not have the reliability nor the power to lift the required fuel
to make a transatlantic flight. There were difficulties navigating
over the featureless expanse of water for thousands of miles, and
the weather, especially in the North Atlantic, is unpredictable.
In 1938 a Lufthansa Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor long range airliner
flew non-stop from Berlin to New York and returned non-stop as a
proving flight for the development of passenger carrying services.
This was the first landplane to fulfil this function and marked a
departure from the British and American reliance on flying boats
for long over-water routes. A regular Lufthansa Transatlantic
service was planned but didn't begin until after World War II.
Since the middle of the 20th century, however, transatlantic
flight has become routine, for commercial, military, diplomatic,
and other purposes. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

May 16, 1951: #BOTD: #HBD! Jonathan
Richman, American singer, songwriter and guitarist, founder and
leader of the Modern Lovers, an pioneering and influential
proto-punk band, is #born Jonathan Michael Richman into a Jewish
family in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Natick,
Massachusetts. The Modern Lovers existed from 1970 to 1974 but
their recordings were not released until 1976 or later. It
featured Richman and bassist Ernie Brooks with drummer David
Robinson (later of The Cars) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later
of Talking Heads). The sound of the band owed a great deal to the
influence of the Velvet Underground and the Stooges, and is now
classified as "proto-punk". It pointed the way towards
much of the punk rock, new wave, alternative and indie rock music
of later decades. Their only album, the eponymous The Modern
Lovers, contained idiosyncratic songs about dating awkwardness,
growing up in Massachusetts, love of life, and the USA. Later,
between 1976 and 1988, Richman used the name Modern Lovers for a
variety of backing bands, always billed as "Jonathan Richman
and The Modern Lovers". These bands were quieter and featured
more low-key, often near-childlike songs as Richman drew on
folk-rock and other genres. Of Richman's original bandmates, only
Robinson was part of any of the other Modern Lovers incarnations.
Since the mid-1970s, Richman has worked either solo or with
low-key acoustic and electric backing. He now plays only acoustic
to protect his hearing. He is known for his wide-eyed, unaffected,
and childlike outlook, and music that, while rooted in rock and
roll, is influenced by music from around the world. On Sale @ 15%

May 16, 1966: Maoism (Mao Zedong
Thought): The Cultural Revolution (CR, The Great Proletarian
Cultural Revolution): The May 16 Notice (The May 16 Notification):
-- The beginning of the Cultural Revolution occurs when The
Chinese Communist Party (CCP) (officially the Communist Party Of
China [CPC]) issues "The May 16 Notice" in an "expanded
session" of the Politburo in Beijing, China. The conference,
rather than being a joint discussion on policy (as per the usual
norms of party operations), was essentially a campaign to mobilize
the Politburo into endorsing Mao's political agenda. The
conference was heavily laden with Maoist political rhetoric on
class struggle, and filled with meticulously-prepared
'indictments' on the recently ousted leaders such as Peng Zhen and
Luo Ruiqing. One of these documents, released on May 16, was
prepared with Mao's personal supervision, and was particularly
damning: "Those representatives of the bourgeoisie who have
sneaked into the Party, the government, the army, and various
spheres of culture are a bunch of counter-revolutionary
revisionists. Once conditions are ripe, they will seize political
power and turn the dictatorship of the proletariat into a
dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. Some of them we have already seen
through; others we have not. Some are still trusted by us and are
being trained as our successors, persons like Khruschev for
example, who are still nestling beside us.". This text
summarized Mao's ideological justification for the Cultural
Revolution. Effectively it implied that there are enemies of the
Communist cause within the Party itself: class enemies who "wave
the red flag to oppose the red flag." The only way to
identify these people was through "the telescope and
microscope of Mao Zedong Thought." While the party leadership
was relatively united in approving the general direction of Mao's
agenda, many Politburo members were not especially enthusiastic,
or simply confused about the direction of the movement. The
charges against esteemed party leaders like Peng Zhen rang alarm
bells in China's intellectual community and among the eight
non-Communist parties of the Chinese United Front (a popular front
of the legally permitted parties in the country, led by the
Communist Party Of China. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

May 16, 1966: Record Releases: -- Pet
Sounds, the eleventh studio album by the American rock band the
Beach Boys, is released worldwide by Capitol Records. It was
initially met with a lukewarm critical and commercial response in
the United States, peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Top LPs
chart. In the United Kingdom, the album was lauded by critics and
reached number 2 on the Record Retailer chart, remaining in the
top ten for six months. Promoted there as "the most
progressive pop album ever", Pet Sounds was recognized for
its ambitious production, sophisticated music, and emotional
lyrics. It was, then and thereafter, Paul McCartney's favorite
record album, and was a major impetus to The Beatles recording and
releasing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It is now
considered to be among the greatest and most influential albums in
music history. The album was produced, arranged, and almost
entirely composed by Brian Wilson with guest lyricist Tony Asher.
It was recorded largely between January and April 1966, a year
after Wilson had quit touring with his bandmates and debuted a
more progressive sound with The Beach Boys Today!. Wilson viewed
Pet Sounds as effectively a solo album and credited part of its
inspiration to marijuana and a newfound spiritual enlightenment.
Galvanized by the work of his idol Phil Spector and rival group
the Beatles, his goal was to create "the greatest rock album
ever made", one without filler. An early concept album, it
consists mainly of introspective and semi-autobiographical songs
like "You Still Believe in Me", about a lover's
unwavering loyalty, "I Know There's an Answer", a
critique of LSD users, and "I Just Wasn't Made for These
Times", about social alienation. Incorporating elements of
pop, jazz, exotica, classical, psychedelia, and the avant-garde,
Wilson's Wall of Sound-based orchestrations mixed conventional
rock set-ups with elaborate layers of vocal harmonies, found
sounds, and instruments rarely if ever associated with rock, such
as bicycle bells, French horn, flutes, Electro-Theremin, string
sections, and beverage cans. It marked the most complex
instrumental and vocal parts of any Beach Boys album, and the
first in which studio musicians (such as the Wrecking Crew)
replaced the band on most of the instrumental tracks. The album
could not be reproduced live and was the first time that any group
departed from their usual small-ensemble pop/rock band format for
a whole LP. Its unprecedented total production cost exceeded 70K
USD (equivalent to 580K USD in 2021). Lead single "Caroline,
No" was issued as Wilson's official solo debut. It was
followed by two singles credited to the group: "Sloop John B"
and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (backed with "God Only
Knows"). A planned successor album, Smile, was left
unfinished. Pet Sounds revolutionized music production and the
role of professional record producers, especially through Wilson's
pioneering studio-as-instrument praxis. The record contributed to
the cultural legitimization of popular music, a greater public
appreciation for albums, the popularity of synthesizers, and the
development of psychedelic music and progressive/art rock. It also
introduced novel approaches to orchestration, chord voicings, and
structural harmonies; for example, most of the compositions
feature a weak tonal center, rendering their key signatures
ambiguous. Although it had been widely revered by industry
insiders, the album was obscure to mass audiences before being
reissued in the 1990s, after which it topped several critics' and
musicians' polls for the best album of all time, including those
published by NME, Mojo, Uncut, and The Times. As a solo artist,
Wilson embarked on a string of Pet Sounds concert tours in the
early 2000s and late 2010s. In 2004, the album was inducted into
the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. Pet
Sounds is certified platinum by the RIAA, indicating over one
million units sold, and has ranked consistently as the highest
rated album on Acclaimed Music since 2004. An expanded reissue,
The Pet Sounds Sessions, was released in 1997 with isolated vocals
and instrumental versions, session highlights, and the album's
first true stereo mix. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

chart by a female artist (18 total) and the only artist in the
history of the chart to have seven commercial singles from one
album (Rhythm Nation 1814) peak within the top five positions, and
holder of eight Guinness World Records, is #born Janet Damita Jo
Jackson in Gary, Indiana. She is noted for her innovative,
socially conscious and sexually provocative records, as well as
elaborate stage shows. Her sound and choreography became a
catalyst in the growth of MTV, enabling her to rise to prominence
while breaking gender and racial barriers in the process. Lyrical
content which focused on social issues set her reputation as a
role model for youth. In 1991, Jackson signed the first of two
record-breaking multimillion-dollar contracts with Virgin Records,
establishing her as one of the highest-paid artists in the
industry. Prior to her first studio project with Virgin, she
appeared in her first of several lead film roles in Poetic Justice
(1993). Her two studio albums which followed, Janet (1993) and The
Velvet Rope (1997), saw her develop a public image as a sex
symbol. These records, along with their promotional music videos
and live performances in concert tours, branded Jackson as one of
the world's most erotic performers, garnering both criticism and
praise. By the end of the 1990s, she was named by Billboard
magazine as the second most successful recording artist of the
decade after Mariah Carey. The release of her seventh studio album
All for You in 2001 coincided with a celebration of her impact on
the recording industry as the subject of the inaugural MTV Icon
special. The backlash from the 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime
show controversy resulted in an industry blacklisting under the
direction of Les Moonves, then-CEO of CBS Corporation. Jackson
subsequently experienced reduced radio airplay, televised
promotion and sales figures from that point forward. After parting
ways with Virgin Records, she released her tenth studio album
Discipline (2008), her first and only album with Island Records.
In 2015, she partnered with BMG Rights Management to launch her
own record label, Rhythm Nation and released her eleventh studio
album Unbreakable the same year. Since then she has continued to
release music as an independent artist. Having sold over 100
million records, Jackson is one of the world's best-selling music
artists. She has amassed an extensive catalog, with singles such
as "Nasty", "Rhythm Nation", "That's the
Way Love Goes", "Together Again", and "All for
You". In 2008, Billboard placed her number seven on its list
of the Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, and in 2010 ranked her fifth
among the "Top 50 R & B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25
Years". In December 2016, the magazine named her the second
most successful dance club artist after Madonna. her accolades
include five Grammy Awards, eleven Billboard Music Awards, eleven
American Music Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 2019, she was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Jackson has been cited as an inspiration among numerous performers

Everett Koop's Report Of The Surgeon General Of 1988 reports that
nicotine has an addictiveness similar to that of heroin or
cocaine. Koop's report was somewhat unexpected, especially by
those who expected him to maintain the status quo in regard to his
office's position on tobacco products. During his tenure, in 1984,
Congress passed legislation providing for new, rotated health
warning labels on cigarette packs and required advertising to
include the labels. Those labels remain unchanged today. New
labels containing graphic depictions of smoking-caused illness and
death have been announced by the FDA, but are on hold pending the
outcome of tobacco industry legal challenges. Koop issued a
challenge to Americans in 1984 to "create a smoke-free
society in the United States by the year 2000." As Surgeon
General, he released eight reports on the health consequences of
tobacco use, including the first report on the health consequences
of involuntary tobacco smoke exposure. During Koop's tenure as
